Tale Ledger is a local-first campaign manager and live-game workspace for tabletop RPG Game Masters. Build your world, prepare sessions, run encounters, present material to players, and carry every consequence into the next chapter—all without scattering your campaign across dozens of documents.

Tale Ledger Local can be used without an account or subscription. Optional connected services add hosted storage, hosted AI allowances, image publishing, and remote player sessions.

Build and manage your campaign

• Create multiple campaigns with dedicated dashboards and searchable records.
• Write a player-facing Story So Far and maintain a private Story Arc for the campaign’s premise, tone, pressures, and future direction.
• Manage characters, NPCs, locations, factions, lore, quests, story hooks, encounters, bestiary creatures, loot, maps, scenes, downtime, campaign history, and group wealth.
• Reuse shared creatures, items, maps, and imported records across multiple campaigns.
• Link campaign material directly to the sessions and encounters where it matters.

Prepare, run, and remember every session

• Plan sessions manually or use optional review-first AI assistance.
• Run encounters with initiative, rounds, hit points, conditions, and combat notes.
• Keep a private Session Log and turn it into reviewed recaps, campaign events, quest updates, and future preparation tasks.
• Send approved recaps into Story So Far to build an evolving player-safe campaign chronicle.

A focused workspace for game night

The GM Session Console provides a clean, table-ready view of the campaign without the usual planning controls getting in the way.

• Quickly access session notes, encounters, maps, hooks, quests, NPCs, lore, loot, factions, and other campaign records.
• Preview maps and staged player material before presenting it.
• Run encounters without losing the GM Console.
• Make private dice rolls with standard RPG notation, optional notes, roll history, and one-click Session Log entries.
• Search the bundled SRD 5.2.1 rules reference completely offline.

Share with your players

• Use local encrypted Player Sessions without a subscription.
• Present player-safe maps, images, cards, documents, and handouts while keeping GM notes private.
• Optional Vault and Studio plans provide remote Tale Ledger-hosted Player Sessions.
• Players can join a remote session without creating their own Tale Ledger account.

AI is optional—and always review-first

Tale Ledger’s local campaign tools do not require AI. If you choose to use generation features, you can supply your own OpenAI Platform API key or use a Tale Ledger Hosted allowance included with an eligible plan. No API key is included in the download.

Generated material is presented for review before it changes your campaign. You remain in control of what becomes established lore.

Your campaign remains yours

• Campaign data is stored locally by default.
• Export individual campaigns or selected records for sharing.
• Create complete workspace backups and recovery snapshots.
• API keys and account credentials are excluded from campaign exports and backups.

Beta notice

Tale Ledger is currently in active beta. Please back up important campaign data before testing new releases. If something goes wrong, the application provides a unique diagnostic reference that can be included with your bug report—never include passwords, sign-in codes, API keys, payment information, or private campaign content.

The bundled System Reference Document 5.2.1 material is provided under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, with complete attribution included in the application.
